Weight Training Motivational Sayings

Fitness Over 40 – Getting Yourself Motivated For Fitness!

Weight and resistance training does not necessarily mean big bulky muscles and looking like Popeye after he eats his spinach. Women especially have much lower levels of testosterone and it is very difficult for a woman to get ‘large’ muscles. The goal for many is to have a lean, defined figure and this is achieved with a combination of weight training, cardiovascular exercise and of course your diet. After all that saying ‘you are what you eat’ wasn’t coined for any reason at all.

After the age of 40, our muscle tissue starts to disappear. If we don’t work to maintain or build it we can lose an average of 10 percent of our muscle mass by the age of 50. By the age of 70, this figure will be a whopping 40 percent decrease according to research from the National Institute of Aging. This loss of muscle mass also means that cells that were on their way to becoming muscle and bone are now sitting in you as ‘fat’ cells, an sadly much larger fat cells as we age. Do not be discouraged by these statistics, it’s not necessarily an inevitable outcome there are solutions. To prevent this loss and keep the lean muscle tissue you have, weight training is the key to your success.

When you put your muscles to work and challenge them they go through a ‘recovery’ process. During this process they use carbohydrates to replenish and this in turn causes your body to burn fat which means working out with weights charges up your metabolism for up to 24 hours post-workout. This process will not only aid in the burning off of unwanted fat, but you will also strengthen your muscles. Stepping on the scale the number may stay exactly the same because the muscle weight will be greater than the fat was. Base it on how you feel and how your clothes fit.

By combining a cardiovascular workout that will burn more calories by challenging your heart with a resistance training programs with weights this is the most effective way to keep your metabolism up and charged. With a regular exercise program when you are over 40 you will enhance your ability to keep the fat at bay, and keep the lean muscle mass. Make sure you have a healthy diet to back up this exercise program, not undo all your hard work and you are well on your way to a lean toned figure.
