is weight pulling good for german shepherds?

i was thinking of training my dog to pull weights…
its still 2 months. i read an article that you should start young but, that was an article about pitbull training.

Click http://groups.yahoo.com/group/GSD_Haven/ Do you see any puppies in that pic?
(No, you can’t join that group – it’s owner closed it down 3½ years ago.)

Puppies exercise themselves, unless crated or tethered by ignorant owners. And as soon as they are tired they collapse for a good long sleep.
When you take a puppy for a walk on-lead, it isn’t for the pup’s EXERCISE, it is for the pup to gain experience of its environment – the movements, reflections, scents, sights, smells & textures. Although called “socialisation”, it has nothing to do with socialising/playing with pups & people.
But at 8 weeks your puppy should NOT be taken off your property yet – vaccinations need at least 2 weeks to become effective.

GSDs should NOT be muscle-bound oafs. From 5 months onwards they should be in the same hard, lean, wiry condition as a champion marathon runner, not a sprinter-on-steroids or a weight-lifter. So forget Pit Bull Terriers and Rottweilers and Mastiffs. Think Belgian Shepherd Dogs and Border Collies.

Join an Agility club and you will find that pups are NOT allowed on the jumps.
Join a SchutzHund club and you’ll find that your pooch has to be 15 months old and have passed the BH before being allowed to start the high-impact stuff.
A small part of it is because of confidence – a pup that hurts itself coming off equipment will be hard to persuade back onto that equipment, and won’t travel it quickly. But mostly it is because of the fragility of young bones and tendons while most of the calcium & phosphorous in the diet is being directed to the growth-plates in the bones (at the ends, where the legs get longer & longer). Once the pooch has reached full height, the minerals get to work strengthening the bones & ligaments.

To find out what things are especially suitable for a GSD, study the Links => Defining_a_GSD in http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/The_GSD_Source , a group whose Home page is well worth adding to your browser’s Bookmarks or Favorites so that you can easily look up such as feeding, vaccinations, clubs, weights, teething, neutering, disorders.

• To ask about GSDs, join some of the 400+ YahooGroups dedicated to various aspects of living with them. Each group’s Home page tells you which aspects they like to discuss, and how active they are. Unlike YA, they are set up so that you can have an ongoing discussion with follow-up questions for clarification. Most allow you to include photos.
