Davis spent a while in Stephens’ half guard, working to maintain position. Stephens got an underhook on the same side as his guard leg and used it to stand back up. Back on the feet Stephens landed a leg kick that Davis answered with a nice combination. Then Davis tagged Stephens with a left hookd that rocked him. Davis then inexplicably clinched up and Stephens recovered and survived the round.

Stephens landed a hard leg kick to open the second as Davis continued to use better footwork to control the distance. Stephens landed a counter punch then another leg kick. They traded inside. Then Davis landed a combination that Stephens answered with a switch kick. More clinching. Davis sought his range then fired a spinning back fist. More jabs from Davis and Stephens shot in. Davis defended the take down but Stephens fought hard for a high single that failed. Davis then went for a trip that gave Stephens a kimura opportunity. Davis smoothly moved to side control and Stephens hung on to the hopeless shoulder lock.

They paw jabs and stalk each other. A minute in and virtually nothing has happened. Volkmann shoots in and takes McKee down. They scramble and Volkmann takes his back, but he’s inverted. They scramble again and this time Volkmann has his back proper. He latches on a rear-naked choke, but McKee has great defense. Volkmann has both hook in but he can’t sink the choke. 90 seconds later and McKee is still defending perfectly. McKee now is punching upwards to try and score points. He’s actually landing many of his punches cleanly. McKee explodes and spins out of the choke and lands in Volkmann’s guard at the horn. 10-9 Volkmann.

The 38 year old Davis was once considered a contender in the UFC’s welterweight division. But after going 2-3 at 170lbs since 2009 he’s elected to cut down to 155lbs and try his luck. He was most recently battered and choked out by Nate Diaz at UFC 118. He did KO Jonathan Goulet at UFC 113. Stephens is a young brawler known for his ferocity and raw power.

Stann landed the first good blows of the evening with a series of kick punch combinations. Stann initiated a clinch and then Leben got a collar tie and began to land some hard uppercuts. Stann survived the clinch but Leben immediately looked to tie up again. Then a fierce exchange began and Stann dropped Leben. Stann let him survive though, if only briefly. Then Stann began to brutally pound Leben with knees and punches forcing ref Josh Rosenthal to stop the action.

Stann has been training with Greg Jackson and many feel he has become a dramatically more complete Mixed Martial Artist under Jackson’s expert coaching.

We might have the fight of the year on January 1st. Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard put on an all-time classic at UFC 125. It looked like it would be a short night for Edgar after Maynard landed power shot after power shot in round one and nearly finished the champion multiple times. Edgar found a way to prevent referee Yves Lavigne from making his presence known, however, and survived the beating he took in round one. Edgar recomposed himself during the break and capitalized on Maynard, who might have punched himself out in round one. It was a back-and-forth affair from there, with Maynard and Edgar splitting rounds three and four, respectively. I scored the fight 38-37 going into the final round, which I ended up scoring 10-9 for Edgar despite a strong urge to give it the ol’ 10-10.
